How to choose between Gloss and Matt finish?

The toughest decision while finalising kitchen doors is to choose between Gloss and Matt finish. This can be a very crucial decision for a designer or a customer as this will set the overall look of your kitchen. Although from last few year there is a shift in market towards matt, but largely gloss is always being a popular choice among the end users.

Mostly kitchen area is small and glossy surface tends to reflect the light, which create a little open up effect in small kitchen. A small light source can be helpful to create enough light in kitchen if you have highly reflective doors. Even if you use dark colors, it absorb extra light and give a great look and feel. When you apply light colors, the reflection level even increase and also create a drama by reflecting colors of surrounding objects in your work area. Matt surface react exactly opposite to the glossy surface. It absorbs the light and reflect nothing. Hence small area can look more small if using matt color without proper planning of good source of light. Most of the country style kitchen use matt wood finish and pastel hue to make kitchen look more sophisticated. Most commonly used Matt finishes are : Matt & Textured Laminate, Matt & Silk finish Membrane, Matt PU Paint and Matt Veneer.

Conclusion:
Best is to choose both, Gloss and Matt. Always try to select the bottom cabinet finish in matt as that area is more prone to get scratched, dented and more chance to come in moving objects. Also direct light at bottom part is rare possibility so no worry of losing the drama of reflection. At the same time choose the wall cabinets in hi gloss finishes, it remain always in safe zone in compare to base unit, get a change of direct light and this area is a first contact point for any visitor in your kitchen.
